Saving energy saves pounds
A recent British Gas poll has found 97% of small businesses want to reduce energy consumption but 27% have no idea how to go about it. We’ll look at some top tips you might not have considered for cutting costs.
Could going green keep you in the black?
At a time when many businesses are searching for ways to cut their costs, a greener approach might be the answer. According to the British Gas survey, 97% of you already knew that. But wanting to reduce your business energy consumption and knowing how to, are two different things. So we’ve taken a look at a few changes you can make.
Switch off
According to the Carbon Trust, simply switching off office equipment instead of leaving it on standby overnight could add up to a saving of £15 a year, per item. For example, are your wireless routers really needed 24/7? Switching off lights that aren’t being used, such as in corridors or empty rooms, could cut your business lighting bill by up to 15%.
Clever kit
If you use laptops, simply changing to new multiple-socket extensions for charging can make a big difference. A/C power adapters continue to draw current if they are left plugged in to a live socket. Some multiple-sockets use sensors to turn off the current if the computer is no longer being charged. A simple move like this can reduce bills for even the smallest business.
Waste paper
Every single year London offices alone plough through over 3.5 million trees-worth of paper. How many of your employees print out and file important emails when they are backed-up anyway? If you haven’t looked at a paper-minimising policy yet, it’s an area of potential savings that could soon add up to a big difference.
Clear up
Furniture or other items around radiators makes the radiator work a lot harder to heat the room. Are there any changes you can make to your office layout to clear space around your radiators?
